This is an “open call” audition. Non-Equity, NO PAY.

We believe that every person should have an equal opportunity to showcase their talent and contribute to the artistic vision of the production. We strongly encourage actors from diverse background to audition and bring their unique perspectives to the characters.

Please prepare one 16-bar cut of a musical theatre song in the style of the show. Please also bring a music device with an accompaniment-only track, along with any cables needed for your device to connect to the speaker. We will also have short readings from the script, sides will be provided on conejoplayers.org and a dance audition – please bring appropriate shoes/clothes for dance audition. Show Synopsis

Conditions at the Sleep-Tite Pajama Factory are anything but peaceful as sparks fly between new superintendent, Sid Sorokin, and Babe Williams, leader of the union grievance committee. Their stormy relationship comes to a head when the workers strike for a 7 ½ cent pay increase, setting off not only a conflict between management and labor, but a battle of the sexes as well.

Character Descriptions

Catherine “Babe” Williams (Looks 25 to 45) – Strong singing role with some movement/dancing – the leader of the Union Grievance Committee, who against her own will at first, falls in love with Sid. Strong, feisty, a little stubborn, and full of pride for the union but also charming and sensitive. The unspoken leader of the workers and women who work at the factory. (Vocal range top: F5-A3)

Gender: female

Sid Sorokin (Looks 25 to 45) – Strong singing role with some movement/dancing – the handsome, new superintendent at Sleep Tite who falls in love with Babe, despite their being on opposite sides of the labor dispute. He is a charming, productive worker. Adamant about retaining his job and improving his job performance. (Vocal range top: Ab4-B2)

Gladys Hotchkiss (Looks 20 to 40) – Strong singing/dancing role. Mr. Hasler’s quick-witted secretary. Her penchant for nights out on the town, along with her sexy demeanor, often lands her in hot water with men. She dates Hines and is chased by Prez. (Vocal range top: Eb5- Ab3)

Myron Hasler (Looks 50 to 70) – Some singing/dancing role. The president at Sleep Tite. Fiscally conservative, he is demanding, stubborn, and uptight and keeps a secret.

Gender: male

Prez (Looks 30 to 50) – Singing /dancing role – President of the union at Sleep Tite. He is not the brightest person. A notorious flirt and womanizer who constantly regrets his marriage. (Vocal range top: F#4-Db3)

Gender: male

Hines (Looks 30 to 50) – Sings and moves well. Time study man at Sleep Tite who thinks Gladys flirts too much. He is the jealous type, but has a kind heart and a talent in knife-throwing. Surprisingly soft around the edges. (Vocal range F4-B2)

Mabel (Looks 40 to 60) – Lead female. Her earnestness can occasionally melt into crassness, but she is always very aware of the happenings at Sleep Tite. (Vocal range top: F5-B3)
