Terrence McNally’s Tony Award-winning “Master Class” is the story of Maria Callas -- one of the most celebrated opera singers of the 20th century. The story itself isn’t so much an exaltation of her success as it is a celebration of the idea that being a star requires not only talent and hard work, but also the attitude of a true diva of the theater ...

It’s the 1970s, and Callas -- almost 50, her time on the stage now over – is holding a “master class” for several voice students. She spends the class with two sopranos, a tenor, and her accompanist. Callas has less to say about their vocal abilities and talent than she does about her own experiences. Had she lived past the age of 54, Maria Callas would’ve turned 90 years old this past December.
