Audition Requirements:

Please prepare 1 minute of a contemporary musical theatre or pop song for the audition. Please do not sing from the show -- but do familiarize yourself with the different musical styles of each song. Those auditioning for ensemble (not Jesus or John the Baptist/Judas), please prepare a song that shows your personality and vocal ability. Bring sheet music in your key; an accompanist will be provided. A CD with an accompaniment-only track is also acceptable, provided it is edited and cued correctly. No a cappella auditions. Please also wear or bring comfortable dance attire, as all auditioners will be required to learn a short dance/movement combination; there will also be cold reading from the script. All those auditioning are encouraged to provide a résumé of their onstage experience when registering for auditions. Please bring a list of all potential conflicts including travel, etc. Any conflicts with the posted schedule must be discussed with the Producers and agreed to by the Director before casting can be confirmed. "Open Call" auditions. No appointment necessary. Please note: There is NO PAY.

Plot Summary:

Prepare ye to come sing about love! Godspell is one of the biggest off-Broadway and Broadway successes of all time. Based on the Gospel According to St. Matthew, and featuring a sparkling score by Stephen Schwartz, Godspell boasts a string of well-loved songs, led by the international hit, "Day By Day." As the cast performs "Prepare Ye the Way of The Lord," "Learn Your Lessons Well," "All For The Best," "All Good Gifts," "Turn Back, O Man" and "By My Side," the parables of Jesus Christ come humanly and hearteningly to life. Drawing from various theatrical traditions such as clowning, pantomime, charades, acrobatics, and vaudeville, the show is a groundbreaking and unique reflection on the life of Jesus, with a message of kindness, tolerance and love.

Character Breakdown:
Godspell requires a diverse ensemble of 5 men and 5 women. All roles are featured. Each actor must bring his or her individual personality traits to the character. Ability to harmonize and improvise are a must! Age ranges and ethnicity are open.

Jesus - Male, high Tenor G#; the driving force of the show. The one with the most energy, humor, and will-power. Gentle but with strength. The type of person others naturally follow.

Judas/John the Baptist - Male, Baritone E. Must portray attributes of both biblical characters; he is Jesus' "right-hand man" and most devoted disciple and then doubter and -- ultimately -- the betrayer. Charismatic, like Jesus, but in a revolutionary way. The most "serious" of the group, but must still possess a good sense of physical comedy.

Listed below are the vocal ranges of the musical numbers. Please use this as a type of "character breakdown" since all Ensemble members will be addressed by their actual names. All Ensemble actors must have experience with harmony and improv. Any special "tricks," ability to play musical instruments, or overall personal quirks are encouraged!

"Day by Day" - Mezzo Soprano
"Learn Your Lessons Well" - Mezzo Soprano
"Bless the Lord" - Soprano, High A
"All Good Gifts" - Tenor, High A
"Light of the World" - Baritone, E
"Turn Back, O Man" - Alto, D below Middle C
"By My Side" - Alto
"We Beseech Thee" - Tenor, High D
